Job Loss Grief Stages

Job Loss Grief Stages When you lose your job, you lose.  stuff. 13 years ago I lost 100% of my income. I vowed that wouldnt ever happen again (that one person could pull a lever and 100% of my ability to pay my bills would evaporate). I also lost my identity, because no long was I the general manager at a software firm. I didnt know how to describe my guy, but after a couple of months I felt like the neighborhood project. That wasnt good for my ego. I lost friends the people I spent hours with each day, who I had inside jokes with, who I trusted with personal information and aspirations. When you arent at the company anymore the relationship changes. I missed the old relationships. In a way, I lost myself, and my dignity, and other stuff. But I dont want to talk about what I lost. I want to talk about the weird-to-me stages of grief, and the emotions, that I went through. If you look at the stages of grief (do a google images search) youll see things like: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. I was not expecting to go through various emotions. I seemed to cycle through them by the minute or hour. Its no fun to be in denial (did that really happen? After all Ive done? Is this the twilight zone??). Its no fun to be angry at people who just a week ago you were collaborating with, dreaming with, on the same page with. But these emotions, these stages, happen. It can be confusing. It can throw you off your game. It can make you wonder if you are broken. You are not broken. You are normal. What you need to do is feel unbroken, and get back to functional. When I cycle through the stages, and my emotions flip-flop around, I have a hard time concentrating. Its hard to focus on networking, or interview prep, or job search strategy. I need to get back to functional. Im not trained in psychology, but here are my two recommendations: Allow yourself to go through the stages. Dont get upset with yourself if you need to break down, veg, or whatever during one of the stages. Of course, dont do anything harmful to yourself or anyone else but give yourself a break and let these stages run their course. Do things to be out of the stages. Eventually, with time, you wont hurt so much. You wont be so confused. You will feel healed. You will be able to move on. I encourage you to do whatever work you need to do to get closer to that feeling of healing. Dont be yourself up for the feelings in #1, but what can you do to feel more in control? I remember in my last job search (January of 2018) I was pretty sure I was going to land The Big One. But I had been there before, years earlier, and I was sure Id land a different Big One. When I didnt land it, I was devastated. So this last time, instead of slowing down in my job search, I sped up. I networked more, I did more job search stuff so that if they came back with a were sorry, but we chose someone else then I could be like its okay, I have other stuff in the hopper. What Im saying is: keep busy. Dont count your chickens before they hatch and do whatever you can so that if one thing doesnt work out, they arent the only game in town. If you have other stuff going on, youll spread the risk and the dependency on one thing. Stay busy, allow the emotions, and move forward. All of that is good advice. Initially, these entrepreneurial efforts were met with condescension, until women such as Estée Lauder, Brownie Wise and Ruth Handler began to rise to corporate prominence and financial success. Now, in the 21st century, women-owned businesses make up more than 9 million firms. They employ over 7 million people and, as of 2015, have generated more than $1 trillion in sales. Despite this significant element of corporate influence in the country, modern-day women still face challenges that stifle and hinder their rise in the corporate world. While no entrepreneur in the history of capitalism has had it easy, the challenges that businesswomen face tend to extend across a multitude of areas â€" including economic, civil and even the ethical realm. Here are just a few examples of the difficulties that women face as they walk the entrepreneurial road of the 21st century. Personality Behavior Stereotypes People often perceive women as more emotional than men. Unfortunately for women, this stereotype remains prevalent within the public consciousness, which includes the male-dominated corporate sector. Women who intend to operate as professionals often find themselves marginalized by their male counterparts due to an expectation of hypersensitivity and emotional instability. These expectations breed an atmosphere among business professionals that leads to gender discrimination toward women aiming to take on a leadership role. As professional operators, women leaders are seen as unpredictable and unstable, mostly due to prejudices mentioned above. Women also face challenges attempting to break into certain fields. Particularly, research has shown that women have a more difficult time getting into careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. This has been tied to a general assumption throughout society, in both men and women, that women won’t be able to succeed in these traditionally male-dominated fields. However, this just isn’t true in reality. There are many trailblazing female role models to point to who are in charge of STEM-focused companies, and thousands of others who work in various other positions in STEM fields. Lack of Professional Role Models Often we find that any woman who has breached a particular glass ceiling in the corporate world has become a trailblazer. The multitudes of successful and accessible female entrepreneurs available to other women as role models are few and far between. Its becoming more and more frequent to see female professionals in executive positions as chief executives, supervisors and operators, but female business owners do not tend to operate in an accessible social circle. Another challenge that female entrepreneurs suffer through comes from a lack of business networking opportunities. While its not completely necessary for women to connect with one another to reach financial success, women aiming to open businesses or expand their operations can benefit greatly from a network of professional women that have gone before. Where We Stand Now Ultimately, the state of womens rights and the way society views women in the United States seems to be on an upward trend, for the most part. With every passing year and every new generation, total equality becomes a more realistic conclusion. Certainly, things have improved since the Colonial Age, but there’s still a long way to go, and progress is certainly slower than we’d like it to be. For example, it took until 2009 for the emergence of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Restoration Act â€" a federal mandate that allows victims of pay discrimination to file a complaint with the government against their employer 180 days after their last paycheck. The fact remains, despite the improvements and advancements, that there continue to be issues and challenges that haunt professional women, and they’re issues that men do not experience. The solution? There are many ways women are combating the challenges, but perseverance, above all, is key. Despite the snail-like pace of the federal government and the inherited biases and stereotypes of our culture, a dogged determination will win the day. As long as professional women and female students continue to pursue their right to excel and rise, change for the better remains inevitable. The female entrepreneur can contribute to that symbol of change.
