Ask yourself, âWhat am I demanding about the relationship?â (When we feel a steady stream of frustration or anxiety, weâve slipped into being very demanding about people and lifeâ¦and weâre on the losing end of having emotionally connected relationships. Weâve become very judgmental!) Ask yourself, âCan I always get what I want?â âHow is what I am about to say or do going to impact the situation?â Letâs explore the 1st attitude That will help you get out of your judgment of frustration or anxiety and put your focus back on your work relationship needs! Inquiry/Awareness â" This attitude is also known at curiositychildren have this in abundance! They are a blank slate that we write on every day. We teach them through cultural/generational norms and values what is supposed to be ârightâ and wrong. As we get older though, our past experiences shape our way of thinkingpast story lines creep back into our memory and we become stead-fast in what we think is universally right and wrong. We become narrow-minded. Practice! Now that weve gone through the first attitude, go back to the questions earlier and utlize the inquire/awareness attitude. Curiosity always informs us with new information. Gaining awareness broadens the mind to help us make more conscious and intentional decisions. You donât wake up and choose to be frustrated or anxious, do you? Asking questions, otherwise known as inquiring, allows us not to assume (and you know how that breaks down into 3 syllables!) Be child-like; not childish. Be curious and focus on meeting the expectations of the work relationship. Got questions? Write a response and let me point you in the right direction! Curiosity might have killed the catâ¦but it wonât kill the work relationship!

How to use Social Media for Business Why Best Practices Matter
How to use Social Media for Business Why Best Practices Matter Understanding how to use Social Media for Business Image Source: PixabayThrough the talks I give to students eyeing up a career in digital marketing, and to businesses hoping to learn more about it, I know there is a huge interest in the question of how to use social media. But there is a distinction that is overlooked, and which I must emphasise. Itâs encapsulated in the headline of this post. The thing point is to focus less on how to use social media and more on social media best practices. In other words, there is more to be learnt about social media than could be incorporated in a how to use social media presentation. And thatâs because of this distinction between the nuts and bolts of how to use social media, and the social media best practices that will deliver a return on the time that you invest in using them.Because there is a huge difference between merely using social media, and actively using social mediaâ"a demonstrably effective use of the platforms to achieve a goal. Fail to appreciate the difference and you could be in trouble, so please take this post as your starting point.âMerelyâ Using Social MediaSometimes, when I have asked people if they use social media, I get a response like: âYeah, Iâm on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etcâThat sounds impressive⦠but only if youâre impressed by width rather than quality. When you mine down into a statement like this, youâll find that the person is not really using social media in any effective way, that they are âmerelyâ using the platforms.Penetrating even just beneath the surface of a personâs claim that they use social media, it often emerges that they are, for instance, chatting with friends on Facebook; browsing a blockbuster trailer on YouTube; looking up Instagram to find out what colour Conor McGregorâs fridge is, etc.If that is your definition of social media use, Iâm afraid Iâve some bad news. Okay⦠itâs not all bad, but this type of social media use has to be put in a separate category, and it has nothing to do with work. Iâm not claiming to be above it, but itâs social media browsing, and I do that when Iâm at home, taking a break from the hard work of blogging, strategising and creating content. Why âMerelyâ Using Social Media is BadToo many businesses adopt the tactic of handing over the running of their social media platforms to a person who may be âmerelyâ using social media, rather than âactuallyâ using social media. Thatâs because the businesses are not aware of the âmerelyâ/âactuallyâ distinction and so are not best placed to check. When I hear about these things, I often ask: âWould you put someone in charge of the accounts solely because they have a calculator. So why the hell would you do it with your digital marketing?!âBusinesses who have done this really need to wake up, recognise whatâs going on, and change their approach as soon as possible. And if youâre a student looking to break into the digital marketing sector, and yo uâre using social media only for browsing, then you need to change your approach too. You must immediately start thinking of yourself as a brand, and ask yourself: âHow can I best promote myself online to potential employers.âIf you take your Snaps, Tweets and FB posts more seriously, you will be amazed at how effectively they can establish a pathway to crucial career doorways, and also help you to get your foot in those doors! If youâre young, of college-going age, the pressure from your peers can be huge and can sometimes deter you from taking business-like action, such as joining groups and online conversations on social media and digital marketing. Nobody likes to be ridiculed and there is a fear among young people that theyâll be ridiculed if, for example, they post a picture to Instagram from a conference or other professional event that they attend.More bad news⦠if this the main thing you are concerned about, you need to forget about it, pronto. Focus on things th at matter. Focus on your content and your profile, and start reaching out to the best connected people.Hereâs a suggestion that I have given to students in the past, and itâs been an effective one for anyone whoâs tried it. If you know someone who has a Facebook business page, why donât you offer to help them with it? This is, in miniature, what you will be doing in a career in digital marketing.. and it is a really brilliant primer.âActualâ Usage the Payoffs of Understanding How to Use Social Media for BusinessSocial Media best practices and âactualâ usage. As far as your business goes, this is the category you want to be in. Itâs the area of social media best practises, where you can say that:You use Facebook business pagesYou use Twitter to engage with a target audience and learning about the latest newsYou use Instagram to promote business with content, and strategically test hashtag to see what engages and what does not.You use SnapChat to create engaging, e ntertaining stories. You promote subjects or organisations across platforms. You appreciate the advertising side of online. You have a process, which you always measure and adapt to make your future posts or campaigns work more satisfactorily.Whether youâre a business or a student itâs crucial for you to be in the social media best practises category. If youâre in business, it will improve your bottom line. If youâre a student, and youâre doing the things listed above in a focused way, you will have real life experience to lay on an interview panel.Good luck!

Job Loss Grief Stages
Job Loss Grief Stages When you lose your job, you lose. stuff. 13 years ago I lost 100% of my income. I vowed that wouldnt ever happen again (that one person could pull a lever and 100% of my ability to pay my bills would evaporate). I also lost my identity, because no long was I the general manager at a software firm. I didnt know how to describe my guy, but after a couple of months I felt like the neighborhood project. That wasnt good for my ego. I lost friends the people I spent hours with each day, who I had inside jokes with, who I trusted with personal information and aspirations. When you arent at the company anymore the relationship changes. I missed the old relationships. In a way, I lost myself, and my dignity, and other stuff. But I dont want to talk about what I lost. I want to talk about the weird-to-me stages of grief, and the emotions, that I went through. If you look at the stages of grief (do a google images search) youll see things like: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. I was not expecting to go through various emotions. I seemed to cycle through them by the minute or hour. Its no fun to be in denial (did that really happen? After all Ive done? Is this the twilight zone??). Its no fun to be angry at people who just a week ago you were collaborating with, dreaming with, on the same page with. But these emotions, these stages, happen. It can be confusing. It can throw you off your game. It can make you wonder if you are broken. You are not broken. You are normal. What you need to do is feel unbroken, and get back to functional. When I cycle through the stages, and my emotions flip-flop around, I have a hard time concentrating. Its hard to focus on networking, or interview prep, or job search strategy. I need to get back to functional. Im not trained in psychology, but here are my two recommendations: Allow yourself to go through the stages. Dont get upset with yourself if you need to break down, veg, or whatever during one of the stages. Of course, dont do anything harmful to yourself or anyone else but give yourself a break and let these stages run their course. Do things to be out of the stages. Eventually, with time, you wont hurt so much. You wont be so confused. You will feel healed. You will be able to move on. I encourage you to do whatever work you need to do to get closer to that feeling of healing. Dont be yourself up for the feelings in #1, but what can you do to feel more in control? I remember in my last job search (January of 2018) I was pretty sure I was going to land The Big One. But I had been there before, years earlier, and I was sure Id land a different Big One. When I didnt land it, I was devastated. So this last time, instead of slowing down in my job search, I sped up. I networked more, I did more job search stuff so that if they came back with a were sorry, but we chose someone else then I could be like its okay, I have other stuff in the hopper. What Im saying is: keep busy. Dont count your chickens before they hatch and do whatever you can so that if one thing doesnt work out, they arent the only game in town. If you have other stuff going on, youll spread the risk and the dependency on one thing. Stay busy, allow the emotions, and move forward. All of that is good advice. But I totally validate the feelings and confusion that you are going through. Job Loss Grief Stages When you lose your job, you lose. stuff. 13 years ago I lost 100% of my income. Challenges Unique To The Entrepreneurial Woman - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Challenges Unique To The Entrepreneurial Woman - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Women entrepreneurs are not new to the American workforce. While the laws that protect women in the corporate world have been hard won and are still being fought for, modern-day business has significantly benefited from the activity of female entrepreneurs and business leaders. You can trace the feminine presence in the workforce as far back as the Colonial Age, but female participation in American business swelled during the World War II era. As the men marched off to war, the mantle of breadwinner passed to the mothers, sisters, daughters and wives that were left behind. Because of this new situation the Cult of Domesticity began to dissolve within the nation, freeing women from the traditional roles settled upon them. Women began to discover their vast capacity for self-sustainability during this time, taking on more authoritative positions in the home and business. When the men returned post-WWII and resumed their places as the primary moneymakers of the household, women began to start businesses from home. Initially, these entrepreneurial efforts were met with condescension, until women such as Estée Lauder, Brownie Wise and Ruth Handler began to rise to corporate prominence and financial success. Now, in the 21st century, women-owned businesses make up more than 9 million firms. They employ over 7 million people and, as of 2015, have generated more than $1 trillion in sales. Despite this significant element of corporate influence in the country, modern-day women still face challenges that stifle and hinder their rise in the corporate world. While no entrepreneur in the history of capitalism has had it easy, the challenges that businesswomen face tend to extend across a multitude of areas â" including economic, civil and even the ethical realm. Here are just a few examples of the difficulties that women face as they walk the entrepreneurial road of the 21st century. Personality Behavior Stereotypes People often perceive women as more emotional than men. Unfortunately for women, this stereotype remains prevalent within the public consciousness, which includes the male-dominated corporate sector. Women who intend to operate as professionals often find themselves marginalized by their male counterparts due to an expectation of hypersensitivity and emotional instability. These expectations breed an atmosphere among business professionals that leads to gender discrimination toward women aiming to take on a leadership role. As professional operators, women leaders are seen as unpredictable and unstable, mostly due to prejudices mentioned above. Women also face challenges attempting to break into certain fields. Particularly, research has shown that women have a more difficult time getting into careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. This has been tied to a general assumption throughout society, in both men and women, that women wonât be able to succeed in these traditionally male-dominated fields. However, this just isnât true in reality. There are many trailblazing female role models to point to who are in charge of STEM-focused companies, and thousands of others who work in various other positions in STEM fields. Lack of Professional Role Models Often we find that any woman who has breached a particular glass ceiling in the corporate world has become a trailblazer. The multitudes of successful and accessible female entrepreneurs available to other women as role models are few and far between. Its becoming more and more frequent to see female professionals in executive positions as chief executives, supervisors and operators, but female business owners do not tend to operate in an accessible social circle. Another challenge that female entrepreneurs suffer through comes from a lack of business networking opportunities. While its not completely necessary for women to connect with one another to reach financial success, women aiming to open businesses or expand their operations can benefit greatly from a network of professional women that have gone before. Where We Stand Now Ultimately, the state of womens rights and the way society views women in the United States seems to be on an upward trend, for the most part. With every passing year and every new generation, total equality becomes a more realistic conclusion. Certainly, things have improved since the Colonial Age, but thereâs still a long way to go, and progress is certainly slower than weâd like it to be. For example, it took until 2009 for the emergence of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Restoration Act â" a federal mandate that allows victims of pay discrimination to file a complaint with the government against their employer 180 days after their last paycheck. The fact remains, despite the improvements and advancements, that there continue to be issues and challenges that haunt professional women, and theyâre issues that men do not experience. The solution? There are many ways women are combating the challenges, but perseverance, above all, is key. Despite the snail-like pace of the federal government and the inherited biases and stereotypes of our culture, a dogged determination will win the day. As long as professional women and female students continue to pursue their right to excel and rise, change for the better remains inevitable. The female entrepreneur can contribute to that symbol of change.

Suggestions For Working With Your Significant Other
Suggestions For Working With Your Significant Other Love can be a powerful force. When you meet a special someone and know you will be spending the rest of your days with this individual, it can make you feel a renewed sense of excitement about life. Of course, time has a way of souring all relationships. As the years go on, you might feel less thrilled by the presence of your significant other. Though this is part of lifeâs journey, it can prove to be a bit of an issue if you and your partner happen to work together. Though there are a number of benefits to working with a spouse or significant other on business ventures, it needs to be handled in the right manner. There are plenty of tense situations that can arise from working with your romantic partner in a professional setting. To get the most out of your time and avoid some of the most dangerous pitfalls of this arrangement, it can be a good idea to get some help. Take a look at these tips on how to best work with your significant other and discover some clever tactics. Mutual Respect Being intimate with another person can be freeing. You are able to share your deepest secrets, desires, and fears with someone and this can help you to feel like you are a more open and understanding individual. Of course, you also might find that some of these areas become ammo to be used against you when you are involved in a fight with your significant other. Tossing hurtful words back and forth is a part of relationships, though it can be a huge issue when it comes to working in professional settings. Even a small argument with a significant other in the workplace can reveal all kinds of personal information you might not want spread around. To avoid this, you need to have mutual respect. Take the example of Chris Saccaâs wife. She and Sacca are able to work together from a place of respect and care, allowing them the chance to become a powerful couple of entrepreneurs. Though it can be a hard line to walk, showing respect can make a huge difference to your interactions and your overall success along the way. Know the Divisions Going out for drinks with coworkers after a long day can be fun. Unfortunately, many people realize that they do not have much to talk about outside of the workplace. This means a lot of people who go out together after work wind up talking about work. When you and your significant other are working together, you might find that you are spending all of your time talking about work and different investment opportunities. Though you might feel excited by having all of this energy to discuss your future, it can also be too much. You need to create distinct boundaries when it comes to work and home. Some couples blur the lines and it leads to some disastrous places. When you are both home after working a long day, you need to have a rule that there is to be no further discussion about work until the following day. This can help you both to maintain sane dispositions while simultaneously keeping your relationship as strong and stable as it has ever been. There are different ways to find your balance, so be sure to have a talk with your partner about your ideas. Space is Key Knowing when to talk about work and when to drop it might be important but there are other factors to consider. If you have been working with your significant other each day of the week, all hours of the day, then you might feel a bit claustrophobic. Working with the same person and then coming back home with this person can be a lot. This means you both need to make sure you take time to create time for yourselves. Caring for yourself and your needs can be crucial when you are working with a partner. While there is no easy way to make this happen, it can be important to have a discussion about maintaining your individual personalities and routines. One great option to explore is using your Saturdays as personal days and coming back together as a couple on Sundays. Obviously, there are going to be cases where this does not work. Still, it can be a helpful template to build from when you are looking for a way to work together, live together, and not kill one another. Little Things You Do Together Finding the right person to spend the rest of your days with can be a rewarding experience. Many people out there long for love and you need to do what you can to ensure you protect the bond you share with your significant other. When you wind up working with your partner, be sure to follow the right protocol and keep a safe distance to keep the home fires burning at all times

How to plan to start-up a new business
How to plan to start-up a new business According to the ONS, as of March 2017 15.5% of all retail spending was done online. Thanks to figures like these, creating a small business has never been easier. The internet is a great place to start getting your businessâ name out there, and get the sales rolling in before you have the opportunity to create a physical company. But where do you start? When youâre planning on how to set up your new business, it can be an overwhelming task. Take a look at these six steps to help you on your way. 1. Start with a business plan This first step is possibly the most important. A well thought out business plan not only gives you a road map to follow for your company, but it shows the bank and other potential investors the potential for growth your business has. When creating your business plan, youâll want to include things such as: The vision of your business e.g. your objectives Your capacity for growth Where you see your business in five yearsâ time Your target market and details of customer profiles Your planned finances and a cash-flow forecast Market research on the necessity of your company/product/services Your business plan will help you to avoid any road bumps or mistakes you might make along your journey, and show your investors youâre committed to making your business a success. 2. Brand your business Your next job is an exciting one â" naming your company! To the public, your business name is the most important part of your brand. It will portray your company to the world, giving an insight into what products and services offer before theyâve even viewed them. You should think about what name will easily show what your business does, while being easy to remember and spell. Donât feel as though you have to pick the first name you think of, itâs an important decision! Be careful not to limit yourself to a name which portrays just one service, as you never know when youâll need to expand! 3. Register your business with the Government To ensure youâre complying with Government rules, you must register yourself as self-employed with HMRC. The website will give you a way to submit any tax returns at the end of the year. It will also give you help with setting up your Class 2 or Class 4 National Insurance contributions. The HRMC online gateway allows you to fill in all of the necessary registration details for your new business. You can select how you would like to register your business, including sole trader, partnership and or limited company. Itâs crucial that you complete this registration within three months of establishing your business, as you could be heavily fined. 4. Outline a plan for your finances Now that youâre the director of a business, itâs completely up to you to ensure all your accounts are organised, so you can calculate your tax bill at year end. A great way to make sure that everything stays ordered is to keep your personal finances from your business transactions by setting up a dedicated bank account for your company. When your business begins to take off, managing the finances yourself may become quite a large job. Itâs at this point that you could consider seeking out the services of an accountant. You could also consider financial management software, if youâd like to keep your accounting in-house. 5. Create your own website Given the amount of transactions carried out online, having a website is extremely important. It gives your customers a space to not only purchase your products or services, it helps people to gather information about your company, and contact your team if necessary. Make sure the design is easily recognisable as belonging to you. Itâs also a good idea to try and get a domain name that includes your company name, as this will help people trying to find you on the internet. 6. Consider applying for financial support Setting up a new business isnât easy, especially from a financial point of view. At the start of your business journey, youâll have to consider costs such as possible office space, computers and printers, and maybe even employees. One of the most common reasons new businesses fail it due to cash flow. To help increase the numbers of successful small businesses, the Government has started offering grants for start-ups that have a robust and sensible business plan. You should look into your eligibility for these grants, as you could receive a loan such as the New Enterprise Allowance, which supports those who are currently on benefits and wanting to start their own business. So, if youâve taken these tips and ready to take action, you should be ready to get started with your new business! All you have to do is take the jump into setting up your company, and watch your dream turn into a reality! Looking for more insights on starting your own business? Check out the videos below!
